Hester Street Collaborative (HSC) is currently seeking Teaching Artists and Designers to teach in HSC’s Ground Up program in New York City Elementary and Middle Schools

Ground Up empowers young people to become active participants in shaping their urban built environment. Students develop art-making and design skills which they apply to real community-based design projects.. Students investigate spaces on their school campus or in their neighborhoods, develop transformative design proposals, and then collaboratively build them. HSC’s teaching artists serve as “artists in residence” and work together with classroom teachers to integrate curriculum into each project using art-making to support classroom learning. Students partner with community activists and leaders to address real public space needs within their community.

Positions are available to teach in-class workshops in the fall and spring semesters. Teaching artists will work with HSC staff to plan, implement, and document Ground Up workshops. Pay is on a per project basis equivalent to approximately $50 / classroom-hour.

How to Apply:

Please address what experience you have in working with youth, community-based work, and what art and/or design media you are comfortable with in your cover letter. Please submit cover letter, resume, and work samples (with up to 5 images) to Dylan House, dylan@hesterstreet.org.
